The Fanfictionary - T
T
Definitions that appear in bold are defined elsewhere in The Fanfictionary.
Tapestry Syndrome - A condition in which an author has so many ideas that he or she can't possibly start them all, much less finish them. Apparently, this was named after an author who was constantly in this state, though I have been unable to confirm this.
Teaser - A teaser is a Drabble that hints at events slated to take place in another chapter or story. It is used as a synonym for Cookie .
Tense - A literary term, Tense refers to when the story is taking place. There are three forms of tense, which are listed below:
Past Tense is the most common Tense used in fanfiction, and it tells a story that has already happened. An example of Past Tense would be: “She ran and jumped over the fence”. Verbs are in their past tense form, and they show that events have already taken place. The past tense verb "had" is sometimes used in this tense, but it is not always necessary.
Present Tense is also common, though it is not as common as Past Tense. It tells a story that is happening now, and an example would be: “She runs up to the fence and jumps over it.” Verbs are in their present tense form, and they are used to show that the events are currently taking place. Present Tense can be difficult to write in, but if the writer is successful, the story will be quite interesting.
Future Tense to my knowledge has never been used in fanfiction. It tells a story that will happen in the future, and an example would be: “She will run up to the fence and jump over it.”. Verbs are in their normal form, and the auxiliary verb "will" is used to indicate that the events will take place in the future.
The Common People - A phrase used to describe small short stories that deal with everyday life in a given universe.
The Powers That Be (or TPTB for short( A. K. A. The Idiots In Charge (or TIIC for short))) - A term that started in the Babylon 5 fandom and which now refers to all fandoms, The Powers That Be refers to the copyright owners of any published work that has a fanfiction following. Any politician, published author, or otherwise that throws a hissy fit about fanfiction falls under this category as well. The Idiots In Charge is the more insulting term.
The Very Secret Diary of (insert character name) - A story written in diary form for any canon character. If the author is skilled and knows the canon well enough, these can be very good.
Thread - In a fanfiction series, a Thread is a plot element that runs throughout the series. It's literary meaning, which also applies to fanfiction, is a small Side Plot that is resolved in either the Falling Action or the Conclusion .
Thinkerism - A sentence so mangled by typos or insanity that it is unreadable and beyond comprehension. Named for the completely mad works of Dr. Thinker. Famous examples include "Out pooped Sailor Mercury" and "Gyra famous on Ami."
Tie-In - A Tie-In is a relative of the Crossover where there is some connection between two different fandoms. It's usually along the lines of one character from one fandom being the relative of another character from a different fandom.
Tinhat - Someone who clings to a delusion and acts like every argument is a conspiracy to lead them astray from the truth. Think of those tinfoil hats that some folks wear to ward away alien mind control. Often used specifically for a certain sect of Shippers who take delusions of a particular LOTR actor Pairing a little too far.
Toad Strangler - Another Babylon 5 phrase, a Toad Strangler is a plot twist so mind bending that the reader takes on the eyes bulging, slack jawed, tongue lolling appearance of a toad being strangled.
Troll (A. K. A. Bezoar) - A Troll, in fanfiction at least, is a person who enjoys Flaming a fanfiction and it's author to dissuade them from writing. Troll is a general use netword, and no one likes having a Troll around.
Trolling - Trolling is when one goes around a fanfiction website and Flames every fanfic that they come across. Not to be mistaken with Trawling, which is to fish the internet for pictures. Trolling is a general use netword, and doing so is frowned upon by everyone, everywhere, except for by the Trolls themselves.
Twincest - Now this is getting to be a bit much. Twincest is exactly what it sounds like - a sexual relationship between twins of any gender, though Yaoi/ Shounen-ai is the most common. Very common in Devil May Cry fanfiction since the release of the third game.
Twink - A person or character who Twinks . It's an insult to call someone this. There is a second meaning that has absolutely NOTHING to do with fanfiction, so I had better mention it. The other definition of Twink is an enthusiastic underage male participant of porn. For that reason, be careful how and where you use this word.
Twinking - To add new super powers to one's OC whenever one feels the need. Usually in these cases, the OC is a Mary Sue .
