The Fanfictionary - B

The Fanfictionary, Part B....

B.

Definitions that appear in bold are defined elsewhere in The Fanfictionary.

Babe of the Week - This is an original character, not a Mary Sue per se, whose sole purpose is to have sex with one of the male canon characters. After they have accomplished this task, they disappear, never to be seen in that particular fic again. They are less developed than Mary Sues, and, yes, that is possible. The term comes from all of those TV shows where the head character meets, and falls for, a new girl every week.

Babyfic - A fic in which characters have, or adopt, and raise children. In some Fandoms it can also represent fanfics where the canon characters are reverted, either mentally or physically, into babies. The latter kind are also known as Kidfics. Strange.

Badfic (A. K. A. Suckfic) - A fic that is so poorly written that the reader often gives up in disgust only a little ways in. Blatantly obvious Mary Sue fics can also be considered to be Badfics. Badfics also happen when the author has such poor grammar, spelling, and punctuation that the fic is not readable. Some Badfics are written intentionally that way, usually as a form of Parody of other fics. Badfics can provide some entertainment value, as some fanfiction readers (Like me. lol) will sometimes keep reading them just to see how much worse they can get. The uninentionally done type of Badfics are a form of Canon Rape.

Barbieshippers - Barbieshippers can either be an annoyance or downright nasty. Barbieshippers are Shippers that are severely fixated on a particular Pairing and will get offended if a fanfiction author uses a different one. They will often Flame authors for that reason and refuse to read any of their work again, no matter how good it is. In their more extreme incarnation, Barbieshippers will complain (quite loudly) in reviews that a fanfiction author did not warm them at the beginning of the fic that a member of their chosen Pairing was going to look at another character. They often have no qualms about reading Badfics, as long as they have that one Pairing. Barbieshippers care only for their Pairing and nothing else - no matter what the Canon or the Fanon says otherwise.

Bash - To portray a canon character as a complete idiot/ villain/ all around jerk, and to otherwise insult them alot.

Basherfic - A fanfiction that's sole purpose is to Bash a canon character.

Best Served, First In - A process in which fanfics are added to a website in order of how well they are written for ease in archiving.

Beta Reader (or Beta for short) - Beta Readers are invaluable to busy or novice fanfiction writers. They read over a fanfiction piece before it is published to the internet, checking for grammar errors, spelling and punctuation mistakes, plot holes, and things that are unclear or do not make sense. They then report their findings to the author, who makes the necessary changes.

B&D or B/D - Short for Bondage and Domination, which is sexual control and humiliation by one character to another. Sometimes Non-Con, sometimes not.

Bishounen (or Bishie for short) - Translated Bishounen means "beautiful boy" and the term represents the ideally beautiful man. The Bishounen is usually quite tall and slender with long, stylish hair, and sometimes, but not always, an overall effeminate appearance. The word is sometimes used now, incorrectly, by western anime and manga fans to describe any man that they find handsome. (This is a Japanese term that came into use outside of fanfiction.)

Boot Scene - A phrase coined by Tracy Hickman, author of some of the Dragonlance novels, a Boot Scene is a scene used in place of a sex scene. For example, you may read up to the characters making out, and then the scene switches over to other characters batting back and forth a plot point. When the scene switches back, the first pair are done and putting their clothes, and boots, back on, hence the name.

Boyfic - A sarcastic term used to refer to fanfictions that are heavy on explosions, weapons, and violence, but low on character development.

Breaking the Fourth Wall - The Fourth Wall refers to the invisible barrier that separates fantasy from reality. A character breaks the fourth wall when they speak directly to their audience or their creator, acknowledging their fictitious existence. The Fourth Wall is usually lying in piles of wreckage at the bottom of Alternate Reality and Subreality fics.

Britpicking - A term that originated in the Harry Potter fandom, Britpicking means to substitute American English words for British English words and spellings.

Britpicker - A person who Britpicks for a fanfic author.

Britspeak - British terms, phrases, and general way of speaking. Essential knowledge for anyone who writes fanfiction that takes place in Britain or with British characters.
