Harry and Hermione, with a sleeping Edward in Harry's arms, disembarked from their plane at Heathrow Airport. To their, and their fellow passengers', relief, Edward had slept through most of the fight, only waking once to accept a bottle. They picked up their car from where they had left it in the parking lot, and after Hermione discretely conjured a car seat for Edward, they headed for their house outside of London. By the time they pulled into their drive, Edward was fussing up a storm, and his new parents were dead on their feet. Harry bathed Edward, fed him, and tucked him into another conjured cot, before he and Hermione fell into bed, exhausted.

The following morning, they went shopping, and by that afternoon, Edward had a cozy nursery to call his own. Several of their neighbors had noticed him, which started a steady stream of visitors to the Potter house to meet the newest member of the family. They explained Edward's total silence and lack of motor skills by explaining that he had been severely neglected and had been very ill for a time. They felt guilty disparaging Edward’s birth parents that way; from what they had read of the family history in the library, George and Abigail Gracey had been very loving parents to Edward and his two older siblings.

Sadly, Edward’s sister, Sarah, and his brother, Jacob had died of scarlet fever, and their mother died of grief shortly thereafter, leaving seven year old Edward in the care of his father. George Gracey turned the care and education of his son over to his trusted servant, Ramsley, and threw himself into his shipping business. That’s not to say that George was an absent parent, oh no, he paid attention to his child and spoke with him; he just had Ramsley ensure that the boy was educated and cared for. George Gracey died when Edward was 25, and four years later, Edward took his own life.

Once their neighbors had satisfied their curiosity and returned to their own homes, Hermione broke the sudden silence.

“I suppose we should introduce him to the Weasleys.” She smirked at her husband’s wince. Molly Weasley considered Harry a surrogate son and had been on him since he married Hermione to give her a grandchild to spoil. They had tried explaining Harry’s sterility to her, but it had gone in one ear and out the other. Upon hearing that they had a son, even though he was by adoption, she would likely crush some ribs with her hugs.

“We also need to tell your parents.” he added with a smirk of his own. Now it was Hermione’s turn to wince, she knew her parents would be thrilled and would immediately form plans to spoil their new grandchild rotten.

"Don't forget Sirius." she fired back. The old Marauder would be as thrilled as everyone else about Edward and would likely start planning as soon as possible how to introduce him to pranks.

Harry and Hermione looked at each other for a moment before they burst into laughter and went about contacting the parents.

Sirius was the first to arrive, and he eagerly accepted his grand-godchild into his arms.

"About time, you two." he teased as he cradled Edward, who looked up at his new grandfather with wonder. Sirius smiled down at him. "Congratulations, little one, you get the be the first member of the Marauders, Generation 3.”

“No he’s not, Sirius Black!” Hermione snapped “You’re not corrupting my son with pranks!” Harry sat back and grinned as his godfather cowed away from his wife as she lectured him against leading Edward down such a path. He calmly took his son out of his godfather's arms and watched with a smile.

An hour later, Hermione's parents, Dan and Emma Granger, showed up, and they were shortly followed by the Weasleys and their various spouses and children. Sure enough, once Edward was safely in Arthur Weasley's arms, Molly practically squeezed the stuffing out of Harry and Hermione, and then she whipped out her wand and commandeered their kitchen. Not long afterward, Remus Lupin turned up, and he quietly reminded Sirius that they had to wait at least a few years before they began Edward's apprenticeship in pranks. Within a few minutes a full scale party was underway, with Edward as the guest of honor.

Edward, for his part, did not fuss or protest as he was passed around between his various grandparents, aunts, and uncles. It wasn't until late into the evening that he began to fuss, and Harry took him up to bed. After many congratulations, well wishes, and hugs, the relatives departed for their own homes, and Harry and Hermione took a cue from their new son and went to bed.

The next few weeks were spent getting a crash course in parenting. True, Harry had babysat quite a bit years before, but then he had just cared for the child for a few hours and handed them back to their parents. This time, the child was there to stay.

“At least we don’t have to go through teething,” Harry remarked early one morning when they were both tired and groggy from being kept awake most of the night by Edward’s crying. “because he already has them all.”

A week later, thanks to Mathew Thompson’s help, the adoption was finalized. Harry and Hermione had opted to let Edward remain a Gracey, out of respect for his previous life and family. A few details, like a birth certificate for him and death certificates for his birth parents, had to be forged with magic to fool the muggle courts, but the American Magic Department was eager to help Harry out. On August 18, 2011, 19 month old Edward Gracey, “born” on January 9, 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, became the legally adopted son of Harry and Hermione Potter.

The occasion prompted another visit from his new extended family. Relatives and friends brought dishes for a potluck and many presents for Edward.
