The Fanfictionary - N & O

N

Words that appear in bold in definitions are defined elsewhere in The Fanfictionary.

Needless Character Death (or NCD for short) - A Character Death that has no point and does not help the plot.

Negoboo - The opposite of Egoboo, Negoboo is any kind of discouragement an author receives.

Next Gen (short for Next Generation) - A fic that focuses on the canon characters' children or grandchildren.

Non-con - Short for nonconsensual, this is a euphemistic term for rape.

Nonshipper - A person who doesn't agree with, and does not use, a canon Pairing. The opposite of a Shipper.

Non-Standard MST - A slight variation of the MSTing in which the canon characters or (rarely) the characters from another fandom completely do the Riffing, sometimes willingly, sometimes forced to by one of the canon villains.

Novel - A piece of Prose fiction usually numbering between 50,000 and 100,000 words. This definition is not set in stone as the definiton seems to vary from person to person and dictionary to dictionary.

Novelette - A peice of Prose fiction usually numbering between 10,000 and 20,000 words. This definition is not set in stone as the definition seems to vary from person to person and dictionary to dictionary.

Novelization - This term usually refers to video game fanfiction, though it can refer to Manga as well. It means to rewrite the canon in the form of a regular novel.

Novella - A peice of Prose fiction usually numbering between 20,000 and 50,000 words. This definition is not set in stone as the defintion seems to vary from person to person and dictionary to dictionary.

O

Omake - Japanese for "bonus", an omake is a bonus One-Shot at the end of a chapter dealing with something else in the story.

One-Shot - A One-Shot fanfiction is a fanfiction that is only one chapter long. The plot, while short, can be surprisingly deep is the author is skilled enough. Most Dream Fics and Songfics and all Drabbles are One-Shot.

One True Pairing (or OTP for short) - A phrase used by Shippers and Barbieshippers to refer to their preferred Pairing.

Original Character (or OC for short A. K. A. Non-Canon Character (or NCC for short)) - An original character (NOT a Mary Sue) created for a fanfiction. The two sexes of them are generally referred to as Original Male Character (or OMC for short) and Original Female Character (or OFC for short).

Original Fanfiction - A misleading term, as there is technically no such thing as original fanfiction. The term loosely applies to fanfiction that takes the basic plot devices and character sketches from an established canon and is then put into an otherwise completely original plot. Is is basically another version of Alternate Reality, and is more common among anime and manga fans.

Orphan Plot Bunny - A Plot Bunny that a fanfiction author has given up on. Sometimes they are given to other authors to write.

Orphan Story - A fanfiction whose author decided not to finish it for whatever reason. Sometimes they are given to another author to finish.

Oscaroid - A fanfic about the relationship (often sexual) between a human and a cat. The term comes from an infamous fanfic titled "Atemis' Lover" where the author, Oscar, is a hermaphrodite and has sexual relations with the male white cat from Sailor Moon of the same name as the title. They are more common then you think.

Out Of Character (or OOC for short) - A term that applies to a canon character in a fanfiction that is acting nothing like they do in the canon. An example would be Toboe from Wolf's Rain being all cynical, bitter, and serious. Happens in alot of fanfictions, as many fanfiction authors either don't bother to correctly portray the canon characters In Character, or they don't know the characters well enough to pull it off.
