The Fanfictionary - C

The Fanfictionary, Part C...

C

Canon - Canon refers to the accepted facts, situations, and characters in a published work of any kind, be it manga, anime, books, or video games. What is canon and what is not is determined by the copyright holders.

Canon Rape - Canon Rape refers to the complete twisting of the Canon, and not in a good way. Bad Mary Sue fics, bad Parodies, lack of knowledge about the Canon, or just plain bad writing can lead to Canon Rape. Unintentionally done Badfics are also a form of Canon Rape.

Canon Worshippers (A. K. A. Canon Pickers) - Canon Worshippers seem to live to get on fanfiction writers' nerves. No matter how many warnings you put in the beginning of a story, informing readers that your fic is Alternate Universe, has Original Characters, or whatnot, they will write you annoying, sometimes scathing, reviews where they point out the obvious fact that your story is not Canon. Canon Worshippers believe that fanfiction should stick exclusively to canon, ignoring the fact that, if we did so, then fanfiction would not be possible.

Challenge - A Challenge occurs when a fanfiction writer or a website moderator combines random plot elements and requests that other authors write a fanfiction with those plot elements in place. The Harry Potter fandom's "Severitus Challenge", where Harry is Snape's biological son, is a common one.

Chan - This Japanese Honorific is also used to designate fanfiction that has sexual situations between characters that are below the Age of Consent.

Chanslash - The refers to Slash that involves characters below the Age of Consent.

Character Death - This means that the fanfiction is question contains the death of one or more canon characters.

Chibi - A term that is more common in anime, manga, and video game fanfiction. It means to be small and childlike. It is more common in fanart than fanfiction. In fanfiction it is more common in humor and Parody fics. (This is a Japanese term that came into use outside of fanfiction.)

Chi-Bishounen - A term invented by the gang over at the Yaoi Files to denote cute boys between the ages of ten and thirteen. Taken from the words Chibi and Bishounen.

Citrus - A fanfiction with sexual situations, but no actual sex. A relative of the Lemon and Lime.

Cliffhanger (A. K. A. Cliffie) - This is when a fanfiction author ends a chapter or story with major plot elements unresolved, leaving the reader hanging over what happens next.

Climax - A literary term, the Climax of the story is where all of the events and the action leading up to this point come to a head and the main plot is resolved. Climaxes are often packed with action and/ or tension in spades, and are followed by the Falling Action, though some authors like to just stop the action, and the book, at once. Doing so often leaves the readers feeling unfullfilled. The opposite of a Climax is an Anit-Climax.

Comments and Criticism (or C&C for short) - What every writer wants, feedback from their readers.

Cookie - Cookies can either be a Teaser for a fanfiction or one of it's chapters, or it can be a short One-Shot fanfiction that stands alone. Some fanfiction authors release Cookies to promote their work and to build up anticipation for an upcoming chapter.

Confilcts - A literary term. Within a well rounded plot, every character has his or her own agenda, whether the readers realize it or not, and they are out to fulfill those agendas. The actions that they take to do so and the paths that they follow whilst doing so are called Conflicts, so called because the paths and actions of each characters conflicts with the paths and actions of the other characters.

Conclusion - A literary term, the Conclusion is the end of the story, which comes right after the Falling Action and is where all of the loose ends are tied up and everybody lives happily ever after. (Or not, in some cases, especially Darkfics and Deathfics ) Conclusions alot of times come in the form of an Epilogue.

Continuation (A. K. A. Future Fic) - A Continuation is a fanfiction that goes beyond the end of the canon. This usually happens when the author is not happy with they way a series has ended or the series was cut short, leaving its fans hanging. An example of this would be a fanfiction that explains the writer's opinion of what happened after the last episode in Hellsing. (Not a bad idea...)

Conventional Couple - An obvious pairing, or one that is already slated to happen, in canon. It can also be a pairing that is commonly used, whether or not it's a canon pairing. Tidus/ Yuna (Final Fantasy X) is a good example.

Crack - A word used to describe Crackfics. Crack has become a genre unto itself.

Crackfic - A fanfiction whose plot idea is so gone, so out there, that one has to wonder what kind of drugs the author was on while it was being written.

Crack Pairing - A distant relative of the Crackfic and the more extreme version of the Unconvential Couple, a Crack Pairing is a pairing that the author has seemingly pulled out of nowhere. A crack pairing has no basis in Canon - or in Fanon for that matter - and makes no sense at all. Crack Pairings have the tendency to become Conventional Couples over time. Reno/ Tifa i(Final Fantasy VII) is a good example.

Crossover - A fanfiction where characters, places, and situations from different canons are brought together in the same story. For example, a Castlevania/ Hellsing crossover where the Belmonts assist Alucard and the Hellsing Organization in destroying vampires. Common, especially in video game fandoms.

Curtainfic - A fanfiction in which characters go shopping for curtains and other home furnishings. Usually contains oodles of Fluff, is either a Slashfic or is a Sequel to one, and is often a prequel to Babyfics.
