The Fanfictionary - H
H.
Half-Drabble - A One-Shot that is exactly fifty words long. Not very common.
Hammerspace - The mysterious dimension in which characters, especially those from the older video games, keep their weapons, and it explains their ability to whip it out, out of thin air.
Hate Fic - A fanfiction whose sole purpose is to mock and slander the Canon. They are out there, but thankfully, I have never had the misfortune of running across one.
H/C - Stands for Hurt and Comfort, in which one character is hurt, either physically or emotionally, and another character gives comfort. A common plot device to make characters eventually have sex.
Hentai - Hentai is manga and anime that focuses on sex alone, with no story involved. It is basically the anime and manga version of PWP, and Yaoi and Yuri are two or its subgenres. You will often see it referred to as H. (This is a Japanese term that came into use outside of fanfiction.)
Het (Short for Heterosexual) - A fanfiction that has for it’s main focus a relationship between two characters of different genders. Opposite of Slash.
Hiatus - When a fanfiction is on hiatus, it is on hold temporarily while the author takes care of something else. Several fics left on Hiatus too long have become Orphan Stories.
Holiday Fic - Oh boy. Holiday Fics are short, often One-Shot fanfictions that have the canon characters celebrating whatever holiday the author feels like throwing in. Usually little more than Fluff , though they are sometimes Parody fics as well.
Honorifics - These really aren't fanfiction terms, but they are used so often in anime, manga, and video game fanfiction that I thought that I had better add them. Honorifics are Japanese suffixes that are attached to names. Some commonly used ones are:
-chan: Denotes familiarity and friendship and used to refer to someone who is the same age or younger. Generally used to refer to female friends, close male friends, pets and children.
-dono: Used as a term of respect. Inferior to' Sama' but superior to ' San'.
-ko: Denotes familiarity with a female friend, often used to refer to one's girlfriend.
-kohai: The opposite of sempai. It is used toward underclassmen by upperclassmen.
-kun: Denotes familiarity and friendship when used to refer to male friends of the same age or younger. Can be exchanged with -san. Also used by to refer to younger or lower ranking women, often used in the workplace to refer to ones female employees.
-san: A polite way of addressing someone. Similar to "Mr." or "Ms."
-sama: You really, really respect someone.
-sempai: one's senior (colleague, fellow student).; Upperclassman, or more generally somebody in the same social class but superior to you .
-sensei: Used for teachers, doctors, and mangaka.
-[blank]: The lack of an honorific means that the speaker has permission to address the person in a very intimate way. Usually, only family, spouses, or very close friends have this kind of permission.
One must be careful when using Honorifics, as they can get very annoying, very fast. The general rule is if they are used in the canon, then go ahead. Otherwise, use them sparingly, if at all.
HSAU - Stands for High School Alternate Universe, this is any fic which has the canon characters going to high school, usually involving characters in whose canon high schools don't exist. Sometimes they are one of the worst kinds of Badfic with Mary Sues aplenty.
