The Fanfictionary - D & E

The Fanfitionary Part D and E...

D

Darkfic - These are fanfictions focusing on the darker aspects of a canon character's personality and actions. They are usually very sad, angry, and/ or depressing.

Deathfic - A fanfiction that has the death of a major canon character and the repercussions of that death against the other characters fall under the category of Deathfic.

Derivative Fiction - The older, more technical, no longer used term for fanfiction.

Deus Ex Machina - Latin for "God from the Machine". In Greek and Roman theater, a god would often swoop down and save the hero (and his girl) from certain death etc, etc, and resolve the plot by killing or banishing the villain to the Underworld or something. The actor playing the god was often held up by stage machinery, hence the "machina'. In fanfiction this refers to a Plot Device that comes at the expense of the Suspension of Disbelief and goes against the accepted facts and laws in a story, allowing the characters to get out of what should have been an insurmountable situation. Usually the mark of a bad or novice author who has somehow managed to work their characters into a corner.

Disclaimer - A short paragraph at the beginning of a fanfiction, and idealily, at the beginning of each chapter, informing the readers that they, the author or authors, do not own the source material for their fanfiction and that they are making no money off of their work. Disclaimers can get quite creative, as I have seen a few that were in haiku form.

Double Drabble - A very short One-Shot numbering two-hundred words in length.

Doujinka (or Djika for short) - A person who does Doujinshi.

Doujinshi - The translated meaning for this is "same stuff, different people". This is Japanese manga fanfiction, a class unto themselves, and they are written and drawn in manga form.

Drabble - A very, very short One-Shot fanfiction numbering one hundred words in length. It can also stand for a section of a longer fanfiction that never gets to the point. Occasionally the term is used as another word for Fluff, especially if it's a case of the author losing the plot.

Drabblet - A Drabblet is a Drabble piece that ended up longer than what the author intended, usually ending up somewhere around a few hundred words in length, while still not being developed enough to be considered a fully developed story.

Dramatic Irony - A literary term, Dramatic Irony is when the reader knows something that the characters don't. Very common.

Dream Fic - A term that I have started using to describe One-Shot fanfictions that focus on the lead character getting knocked out or something similar and having a “what if” dream that makes them rethink their choices and actions, though usually too late to do anything about it.

E

Egoboo - Short for Ego Boost, Egoboo is any kind of encouragement an author receives.

Epic - A literary term, an Epic is a story or poem that is very long and has quite the fair share of action.

Epilogue - A literary term, the Epilogue is the final chapter or section of a story, which often serves as the Conclusion.

Erotica - A term used to designate "tasteful" Sexfics from "trashy" porn. The line between the two is fine and heavily blurred.

Estrogen Brigade - A term used to describe groups of Fangirls who are heavily devoted to a particular male canon character.

Expanded Universe (EU for short) - Less common than Alternate Universe, Expanded Universe is where a writer takes the story beyond what has already happened in the canon. Side stories written by fanfiction authors that explore new paths and situations also fall under Expanded Universe. A good example of this are all of those Star Wars books running around that were written by people other than George Lucas.
