The Fanfictionary - R
R
Words that appear in bold in definitions are defined elsewhere in The Fanfictionary.
Rabid - A derogatory term that is used to describe when Fangirls and Fanboys become very nit picky and obsessive about their favorite fandoms and characters. They obsess over EVERYTHING about their favorite person or character, and talk and fantasize about them endlessly. Fans that are Rabid have the tendency to be very annoying.
Rapepair - A Pairing not normally seen in it's respective fandom. Some are good, some are downright creative, and some will give you nightmares.
Ratings - These are important. Ratings are what fanfiction readers and writers use to determine what kind of content a fanfiction may contain. There are two main systems used by the fanfiction community, and they are the American Movie Ratings, used by virtually everyone online, and Fanfiction.net's own rating system, used exclusively on that site.
American Movie Ratings
G - This is the general rating. Fanfictions with this rating can be viewed by anyone of any age. It contains no sex, no language, and no violence. You could let your grandmother or you six year old brother read this.
PG - This is the next level. PG contains the bare minimal language, violence, and while it can hint at possible sexual situations, it cannot go into them. You would be a little wary of letting your six year old brother read this, but your grandmother would be fine.
PG-13 - PG-13 fanfictions may contain some mild language, some non graphic violence, and the bare minimal of sex and sexual situations. You would not let your brother read this, and letting your grandmother read it may not be a good idea.
R - Now this is where things get serious. A fanfiction that is rated R should not be read by anyone under the age of 18 without the express permission of an adult. These kinds of fics my contain some strong language, some graphic violence, and non-explicit sex. You would want to keep your little brother as far away from these as possible, and your grandmother would probably faint.
NC-17 - The highest rating a fanfiction can be given, NC-17 fics are for no one below the age of 17, with no exceptions! It doesn’t matter if they have an adult’s consent, no child should be allowed to view this kind of content. Fanfictions rated NC-17 can contain the strongest language, the highest levels of violence and gore, and explicit sex. Your little brother would probably be traumatized for life, and your grandmother would more than likely have a heart attack.
Fanfiction.net Ratings
K - This is the equivalent of the G rating. It contains content suitable for people of all ages.
K+ - Suitable for older children, nine years and up, with mild violence not resulting in physical injury. May also contain mild language.
T - Suitable for teenagers 13 and up and contains mild language, some violence, and mild suggestive themes.
M - Suitable for teens 16 and up, with strong, but non explicit adult themes, strong language, and references to violence.
MA - Content suitable for adults only.
B - Content suitable for very young children between the ages of one and three. Good luck finding a fanfic with this rating.
Read and Review (or R&R for short) - What every fanfiction author wants, but not always gets.
Real Life (or RL for short) - That annoying thing that keeps fanfiction authors from updating their work, sometimes for years.
Real World Responsibilities (or RWR for short) - A relative of Real Life , RWR are things like work and school that keep fanfiction authors away from their work.
Rec - This little word means to be recommended, or receive recommendations over your own, or someone else's, work.
Real Person Fanfiction (A. K. A. Actorfics) - Fanfiction that revolves around real people. Very controversial, and it can cause mountains of trouble if the subject of the fanfiction takes offence and comes after the writer and web host. Very creepy.
Real Person Slash - It is exactly what is sounds like, and it is even harrier than Real Person Fanfiction . Be very, very careful, and tread lightly with this. This is also banned from the Anime Fountain website and forum.
Rapefic - A fic with often violent, Non Con sex. While common, they are frowned upon by the fanfiction community because they are so degrading to a character.
Resolved Sexual Tension (or RST for short) - Unresolved Sexual Tension that was finally resolved.
Retconning - If the copyright holder chooses to change facts or add more details that contradict the canon then it is called retconning, and the new material becomes canon, though it's the opinion of the fans which really determines what is canon and what is not. A good example of retconning are the major changes made by Iga to the Castlevania timeline in which he removed four games - Castlevania Legends, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, and Castlevania 64 from the series' official timeline. He has since taken alot of flak as he has been accused of ruining the previously established storyline as well as removing the games that he did not personally oversee after his own crowning achievment, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, was released. So retcon at your own risk.
Revenge Fic - A fanfiction where another character, usually an OC gets revenge on a canon character who richly deserves it, or a fic in which characters heap misery and suffering on the author that either created them to begin with or on a fanfiction writer that abused them, OR a Flame written in story form from one author to another that insulted them or their work. The third version can sometimes appear in a MSTing format.
Rice Out - No offence intended to Ms. Anne Rice (whose Vampire Chronicles occupy a sizable space in my private library), but to Rice Out means to throw a huge fit over negative criticism, and to be fully worthy of the term one has to insult readers and reviewers alike. This phrase can also be used to describe any of the other of TPTB or TIIC who throw a fit over fanfiction. Sometimes the term is seen with a trademark sign (™) after it, and that is usually a direct slap to Anne Rice because of her possessiveness of her work.
Riff - A term used in MSTings, to Riff a fanfiction is to poke fun at it.
Rising Action - A literary term, the Rising Action is the section of the plot that follows the Prologue and precedes the Climax. It is marked by a rise in character development and and increase in action and/ or tension. The closer the plot gets to the Climax, the higher the action and tension become. The Rising Action takes up most of the story.
Round Robin - A single fanfiction written by two or more authors in tandem with each other. One author writes the first chapter, then the second author writes the next chapter and so on until the story is completed.
