The Fanfictionary - G
G.
Gank, Gack - This word means to take a Character Sketch or something else original from another fanfiction author, with permission.
Gayfic - A fic that revolves around characters who are actually gay in canon. Quite the difference from Slash, which revolves around gay relationships between characters that are straight in canon.
Gen (Short for General) - A story that has no romance or sex. Needless to say, these are relatively rare. The word can also stand for a fanfiction that doesn't fit into any of the other genres that are out there.
Genderfuck - A fic in which a character has a sex change, usually through experimentation or magic gone awry. They are usually the basis for a Sexfic, and they are most common in Sci-fi and Harry Potter.
Genre - Genres are the categories that a fanfiction can fall under, depending on its content. Fanfiction can and does cross Genres often, allowing a modern fantasy such as Harry Potter to take place in a Sci-fi universe, for example. There are many different genres, which are listed below.
Angst - A Genre that deals with dark, sad, and depressing feelings and lots of self incrimination, especially on the part of canon characters and Mary Sues.
Drama - Drama is a relative of Action/ Adventure with a bit more action, less adventure, and more emotion involved. Drama often crosses over into Suspense and Mystery.
Fantasy - A Genre that deals with swords, strange creatures, and magic. Think Lord of the Rings. This genre is sometimes simply referred to as Swords and Sorcery.
Horror - Horror deals with stories intended to startle, shock, or otherwise scare the daylights out of the characters (and the reader).
Humor - A Genre whose purpose is to amuse the reader. Parody is sometimes considered a subgenre of Humor.
Mystery - Mystery is the genre that deals with a crime or some event and the characters trying to figure out the who, what, where, when, why, and how. A lesser version is simply the characters trying to solve a large problem that takes up most of the Plot. Mystery frequently crosses over into Suspense.
Parody - Parody’s sole purpose is to make fun of either the source material or other fanfiction. On some websites, it is considered a subgenre of Humor.
Romance - A Genre that deals with characters and their growing feelings for each other. Sex may or may not appear in these kinds of fics.
Sci-fi - Stands for Science Fiction, a genre that deals with characters and situation that take place far into the future with technology that far exceeds ours. If the technology in question is advanced enough, a fanfic may still be considered Sci-fi, even if it takes place in the present, or even in the past. Think Star Trek.
Supernatural - A relative of Horror and Fantasy, Supernatural deals with ghosts and ghouls and haunted buildings, demons and such. It can also contain Fantasy elements, such as magic. Unlike Horror, Supernatural is not always intended to scare.
Suspense - A genre intended to keep you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails, wondering what’s going to happen next. Suspense stories will often drop just enough clues to make you guess what is going to happen but make it seem as if everything is going wrong for the characters. Supense often crosses over into Mystery.
Tragedy - Three words: Romeo and Juliet. Tragedy usually has Romance and Suspense elements in it.
GFIME - Stands for Girls Fall Into Middle Earth, the basis for many a Legomance. The term can also used to describe any fanfiction from any fandom in which a Fangirl gets sucked out of her world and into the characters', usually ending up the girlfriend/ adopted daughter etc. etc. of a canon character. These fics scream "I am a Mary Sue!", and I advise that you don't turn your back on them unless you are running full tilt in the opposite direction.
Glomp - To have one character run up to another and pounce on them, usually to hug or otherwise mob them. Used mostly is Scriptfics and Muse conversations.
Goosex - A relative of the Tenticlefic , Goosex is an Sexfic involving a gelatinous blob using their ah, talents on humans in inventive ways. Often seen as derogatory towards canon characters.
Gratuitous Touchy Moment, Gratuitous Tactile Moment (or GTM for short) - Innocent physical contact between characters, intending to show support or to give comfort. These things can easily lead to something not quite so innocent.
