The Fanfictionary - F

The Fanfictionary, Part F....

F

Faanfiction - Nope, that's not a typo. Faanfiction is a Parody of other fanfiction or an entire Fandom, loaded with injokes.

Face-Fault - In Anime and Manga, a Face-Fault is where a character stands there with there mouth hanging open in surprise and shock, and their eyes get huge and blank. It's the same thing as the "jaw drop" of American animation.

Face Plant - In Anime and Manga, a Face Plant is where a character falls over face first, usually in reaction to monumental stupidity on someone's part.

Factions - Factions form when a fandom splinters, with each group preferring certain characters, pairings, and situations. Those groups are called Factions.

Falling Action - A literary term, the Falling Action is the part of a plot that follows the Climax and precedes the Conclusion. It is marked by a sharp dropoff in action and tension, and the resolving of most of the loose threads, though some may be saved for the Conclusion. The Falling Action is often the shortest part of a story.

Falstaff Syndrome (A. K. A. Top Heavy) - A term used to describe fanfics with titles that are way too long. Supposedly named after an author (whom I haven't been able to find anything on...) who was infamous for his long winded titles.

Fanboy - Fanboys are the male members of a fandom. They usually, but not always, like the female characters from their preferred canon and enjoy writing fanfics and drawing fanart about their favorite characters. The term can be derogatory if the Fanboys are being Rabid.

Fanboy Out - A phrase coined by Angel and I (as far as I know), Fanboying Out is a stage of development of a Fanboy on his way to becoming Rabid. During this stage, he will begin to become obsessed with his favorite person from his fandom of choice and begin to hunt for anything he can learn about her (or him, in some cases). He will talk about her/ him quite a bit, though not constantly, and if the person in question is an actor or musician, he will convince himself that she absolutely loves all of her/ his stuff, no matter what his normal preferences and tastes are.

Fan Canon (A. K. A Fanon) - Fan Canon are ideas used so often by fanfiction writers that they come to be regarded as accepted parts of the canon, however unlikely they may be. It can also be used to describe ideas that are come up with by the fans, using hints that were dropped in the canon. Vincent as Sephiroth's biological father from Final Fantasy VII is a common example of Fan Canon.

Fandom - Aficionados of anything from manga to video games can collectively form a fandom. They are usually very nit picky about their favorite subject and are interested in every little thing. They can be fanartists or fanfiction writers, and the two genders of the group are usually referred to as Fangirls and Fanboys. Fandom can also refer to the canon itself.

Fanfic/ Fic - An abbreviation of "fanfiction".

Fanficcer (or Ficcer for short) - A fanfiction writer.

Fangirl - Fangirls are the female members of a fandom. They usually, but not always, like the male characters from their preferred canon and enjoy writing fanfiction and drawing fanart about their favorites characters. Sorry ladies, but Fangirl is more derogatory than Fanboy , as Fangirls have the tendency to be Rabid much, much more often and to a greater extreme. To some degree, Fangirl has come to stand for the obsessive female fan whose life revolves around her favorite characters. Anyone who has seen Yuki Sohma's Fan Club Girls from Fruits Basket knows what I'm talking about.

Fangirl Out - Another phrase coined by Angel and I (as far as I know), Fangirling Out is a stage of development of a Fangirl on her way to becoming Rabid. During this stage, she will begin to become obsessed with her favorite person from her fandom of choice and begin to hunt for anything she can learn about him (or her, in some cases). She will talk about him/ her quite a bit, though not constantly, and if the person in question is an actor or musician, she will convince herself that she absolutely loves all of his/ her stuff, no matter what her normal preferences and tastes are.

Fanservice - Any scene inserted to specifically keep the fans happy. Usually a shower and/ or sex scene or something like that.

Fanwank - A Fanfwank is the fan equivalent of a Retcon in which a writer redoes the canon to suit his or her own writing and ideas. Usually miles out of text, they rely heavily on Subtexts to explain the hows, whys, and wherefores in the canon. They usually are Alternate Universe or, in some extremes, Alterante Realitiy fics, though the author will often insist that they are still canon.

Ficart - A piece of fanart that depicts a scene or character from a fanfiction.

Ficathon - A group writing challenge in which one person picks a subject or topic, everyone that's participating comes up with a story plot and idea on that topic, and the ideas are shuffled and randomly handed out, and everyone has to write one story from the pile by a certain deadline.

Ficlet - Another word for Drabble or One-Shot fanfiction.

Filk - A Parody in music, Filks are copyrighted songs, with the lyrics changed around a bit to fit a character. Unlike Songfics , Filks don't have lines of prose between the lyrics, nor are they as common as regular Songfics. "The Night Sparda Went Crazy" on Fanfiction.net, which is a Parody of Weird Al Yancovic's, "The Night Santa Went Crazy" is a good example. As a matter of fact, almost ALL of Weird Al Yancovic's songs are Filks.

First Time Fic - A fanfiction that explores a couple's first romantic or sexual or encounter. (or both) Usually tooth rottingly sweet.

Flame - A Flame is a review whose sole purpose is to mock and slander the author of a fanfiction. Very offensive and usually filled with every curse word known to man, they reflect poorly on the reviewer as many of them are poorly written and in most cases the flamer has not even bothered to really read said fanfiction. Flame is a general use netword, and it's use is frowned down upon by everyone, everywhere, especially fanfiction writers and fanartists.

Flamewar - What every fanfiction writer doesn't want. Flamewars happen when someone writes a Flame and someone else responds with another Flame, and it goes on and on.

Flangst - An odd mixture of Fluff and Angst . Don't ask me how it works; I guess you'll know it when you see it.

Fluff (A. K. A. Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy (or HHJJ for short)) - Fluff has a few different meanings. The most common meaning is a fanfiction, or a part of one, that has the characters having good times with each other, no matter what they are doing, be it weddings, get togethers, or just playing a game of catch. That kind of Fluff focuses on positive feelings and events. The second, less common, more derogatory meaning is when the author loses touch with their plot and writes filler to keep the story going while they try to figure out what happened and (hopefully) get back on track. Fluff can also apply to Holiday Fics and Sillyfics.

Fluffy Angst - Fluffy Angst differs from Flangst in that the story starts out dark and depressing but ends up all happy and cheerful. I have seen alot of these.

Fusion - A relative of the Crossover in which characters from a different fandom, instead of just meeting, actually replace the characters of a another fandom in their world. I haven't seen too many of these.

FUT - Stands for Frequently Used Terms, which is a fanfiction glossary or dictionary like the one you're currently looking at.
